There are many home remedies when it comes to hangovers, but did you know that regular physical exercises might help you get rid of those severe headaches one experiences due to a hangover? A recent study reveals that regular physical exercise might help reduce the severity of hangovers. Athalie Redwood-Brown and Jen Wilson from Nottingham Trent University conducted the study where the research revealed the effects of exercise on hangover symptoms. Around 1,676 undergraduate students who experienced at least one hangover in the past three months participated in the study.
The study involved a questionnaire to understand the alcohol consumption patterns, physical acidity levels and frequency and severity of the hangover of these participants. They were also asked to perform at least 30 minutes of physical activity per week.
Findings Of The Study:
The results showed a clear connection between alcohol intake and the severity of hangovers. The findings revealed that the more alcohol consumed, the worse the hangovers were. However, those who regularly engage in rigorous physical activities, such as running, had less intense hangover symptoms as compared to others. This suggests that higher levels of exercise may play a role in alleviating hangovers.
How Exercise Reduces Hangover Symptoms?
Pain Modulation: Hangovers often come with headaches and muscle pain. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which act as natural painkillers and can reduce the sensation of discomfort.
Better Sleep Quality: Hangovers are commonly associated with poor sleep. Regular exercise helps improve sleep patterns, leading to better rest and recovery after a night of drinking.
Improved Metabolism: Exercise boosts the body’s metabolism, aiding in the more efficient processing of alcohol and potentially reducing the aftereffects of drinking.
Reduced Inflammation: Alcohol consumption can trigger an inflammatory response in the body. Exercise has anti-inflammatory benefits, which can help ease some of the physical discomfort related to hangovers.
While exercise can reduce the severity of hangovers, the study shows that it is not a cure. The researchers of the study stress that the best way to avoid hangovers is by drinking in moderation or avoiding alcohol entirely. Regular physical activity may alleviate some symptoms, but it cannot fully prevent the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption.
