Vaping, often touted as a safer alternative to smoking, has gained popularity, especially among young people. However, experts warn that it poses significant health risks and can lead to severe addiction. In order to address the alarming rise of novel nicotine delivery systems among Indian children and youth, Mothers Against Vaping (MAV), has launched a campaign titled ‘Please Stop This.’
MAV is a collective of concerned mothers advocating against nicotine products like vapes, e-cigarettes, and heat-not-burn devices. The campaign draws strength from a detailed study uncovering alleged strategies used by multinational tobacco companies to circumvent India's ban on these products. Through research spanning medical and non-medical sources, past legal cases, and media investigations, the study reveals the industry's tactics to influence policy and shape public opinion in favour of such products.
To know more on the issue of vaping and how it is rapidly becoming Gen Z's favourite, we speak with Dr Sameer Malhotra, Senior Director and Head of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences at Max Super Speciality Hospital, and Dr (Prof) Amit Kumar Sharma, Head of ENT at SHALBY Sanar International Hospitals.
Vaping and Nicotine Addiction
At the core of vaping's addictive nature is nicotine, a highly addictive substance. Dr Malhotra explains, "Nicotine acts on the dopaminergic reward pathway in the brain, leading to cravings and withdrawal symptoms when unavailable. This compulsion can result in dependency." Vaping devices deliver nicotine rapidly, intensifying its addictive potential. Dr Sharma adds, "The rapid delivery of nicotine through vaping leads to quick dependence, making it even more addictive than traditional cigarettes."
Health Risks Beyond Addiction
While vaping is often perceived as less harmful than smoking, it is not without consequences. Dr Malhotra says, "Nicotine can increase heart rate, blood pressure, and cause anxiety and sleep disturbances. It can also interfere with self-control and concentration." Beyond nicotine, vaping devices contain chemicals that could predispose users to cancer, lung problems, and even fatalities from inhaling certain oils.
Dr Sharma elaborates on the broader health implications: "Vaping harms the skin, skeletal structure, cardiovascular system, and respiratory tracts. Given its relative novelty, the risks of passive vaping are still unclear, but they cannot be ruled out."
The Role of Social Perception
One of the reasons vaping is so appealing, particularly to young people, is its portrayal as a safer or “cool” habit. Social media and peer pressure further perpetuate this myth. Dr Sharma says, "Youngsters are deluded into thinking vaping is safer than cigarettes due to social influences and lack of awareness about the associated risks."
Dr Malhotra concurs, adding, "There are many myths that vaping is ‘cool’, ‘safe’, or ‘not that addictive,’ but the reality is far more dangerous."
Breaking the Cycle of Addiction
Overcoming vaping addiction requires awareness, support, and lifestyle changes. Dr Malhotra suggests adopting a holistic approach:
"Be assertive and learn to say NO to substances of abuse."
"Engage in healthy hobbies, maintain a balanced diet, and follow a regular exercise routine."
"Seek professional psychiatric help for addiction recovery if necessary."
Dr Sharma stresses the role of community: "Support groups, parents, educators, and counsellors are vital in de-addiction efforts. Youngsters should channel their energy into sports and creative pursuits."
