Doctor Shares Signs Of Diabetes That You Might Notice When You Go To Bed
Diabetes is a chronic condition wherein you have increased blood sugar levels. A person usually develops the condition when their pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin or no insulin at all or when their body doesn’t respond to the insulin that is produced by the pancreas.
There are different types of diabetes and depending on the type, the condition can be classified into chronic or acute. Chronic diabetes are Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. Pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes are conditions which can have the potential to be reversed.
When you have high blood sugar levels for a prolonged period of time, it damages different parts of your body. High blood sugar can lead to heart disease, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic nephropathy among others. Therefore, it is important to manage your blood sugar levels.
To manage the condition, it is necessary that you spot the symptoms of the disease and then seek treatment for the same. Dr Lott in a recent video on TikTok shared “five warning signs of diabetes you may be experiencing every night”.
Here, take a look at the five signs of diabetes as shared by Dr Lott.
Bathroom Visits
The first sign was “too many bathroom visits” during the night, according to a report in express.co.uk. Dr Lott says, “Are you waking up several times a night to pee?” This condition, called nocturia, arises when kidneys work hard to get rid of excess blood sugar.
Sweating
The second symptom he said was profuse “sweating at night”. With the body working hard to remove excess blood sugar at night, blood sugar levels can drop too low. This is known as nocturnal hypoglycaemia and it leads to sweating as well as headaches.
Dry Throat
The third sign was a “dry throat” or “dry cough”, especially if it disrupts sleep. Diabetes can lead to a dry throat due to a number of factors including dehydration caused by increased urination.
Blurred Vision
“Blurred vision when you’re trying to read before going to bed” was another symptom he highlighted. Elevated blood sugar levels can cause swelling to the eyes and draw fluid from tissues and this makes focusing difficult. This blurry vision should dissipate once blood sugar levels normalise.
Post Dinner Hunger
The last warning sign that Dr Lott describes is “post-dinner hunger”. This condition is known as diabetic hyperphagia which happens due to insulin issues that hinder the body's ability to utilise glucose for energy.
