International Men’s Day is observed every year on November 19. The day celebrates the contributions, achievements and well-being of men in society while also highlighting the challenges they face. International Men’s Day aims to raise awareness about men’s health issues and encourage positive male role models.
The day also gives an opportunity to address critical topics like mental health, prostate cancer and suicide prevention which affect men but often go unspoken due to societal stigma. There are several health issues that tend to impact men more. Some of these conditions can be detected early if one undergoes regular health screenings.

Here, take a look at some of the top health screenings that every man should undertake if they’re above 40.

Blood Pressure Check

Regular monitoring of blood pressure helps detect hypertension early which is a condition that increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Men over 40 should have their blood pressure checked annually or more frequently if they have a family history of cardiovascular issues.

Cholesterol Test

A lipid profile test measures cholesterol levels, including LDL (bad cholesterol) and HDL (good cholesterol). Increased cholesterol levels can lead to clogged arteries, thereby, increasing the risk of heart attacks. Men over 40 should undergo this test every 4-6 years or more often if at risk.

Blood Sugar Test

Testing for fasting blood sugar or HbA1c levels can help screen for diabetes or prediabetes. Early detection is important for managing blood sugar levels and preventing complications such as nerve damage and kidney disease.

Prostate Screening

A PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test or a digital rectal exam (DRE) can detect signs of prostate cancer which becomes more common in men after 40. Discussing the risk factors with a doctor can help determine the frequency of screening.

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Men over 40 should discuss the need for a colonoscopy or stool-based tests with their doctor, especially if they have a family history of colorectal cancer. Early detection can save lives by identifying precancerous polyps.

Eye Examination

Comprehensive eye exams can help detect age-related issues like glaucoma, cataracts or macular degeneration. Men over 40 should have their eyes checked every 2-4 years to ensure healthy vision and overall eye health.

Bone Density Test

While this is overlooked, osteoporosis can affect men, especially those with a sedentary lifestyle or a history of fractures. A bone density test helps understand the risk of fractures and bone health.

Testicular Exam

Regular self-exams and clinical evaluations can help detect testicular cancer or other abnormalities. Though less common, testicular cancer can occur in middle-aged men and is often treatable if caught early.

Mental Health Assessment

Depression, anxiety and stress often go unnoticed in men due to societal stigmas. Routine mental health check-ins with a healthcare professional can help identify and address issues, thereby, improving overall quality of life and well-being.
