The State Health Department of Tamil Nadu has issued a public advisory warning of a surge in viral infections, including dengue, influenza and other fever-related illnesses amid heavy rainfall in several districts in the state. Chennai and its surrounding districts — Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur are witnessing a significant increase in cases of fever, respiratory infections and viral diseases.
The Health Department has urged residents to exercise extra caution, especially for children who are more susceptible to infections. There have also been reports of malaria and leptospirosis from various parts of the state.
Officials highlighted symptoms such as high fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches and headaches. The public has been urged to seek immediate medical attention if these symptoms occur.
Speaking to IANS, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that the department is especially vigilant in ten districts; Chennai, Coimbatore, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, Tiruvallur, Theni, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur and Tiruchi which accounts for 57 per cent of the state’s dengue cases.
Dr T.S. Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, emphasised that the health department is keeping track of dengue and other fever-related cases reported by both government and private hospitals. The public has been advised against storing rainwater in discarded household items, as this can create breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Also, the health department recommends drinking only boiled water to prevent waterborne diseases.
Here, take a look at some of the tips to keep yourself protected from viral diseases during rains.
Maintain Personal Hygiene
Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after touching surfaces in public spaces. Viruses can live on surfaces and touching your face can transfer them to your body.
Avoid Touching Your Face
Your eyes, nose and mouth are common entry points for viruses. Reducing face-touching helps prevent viral particles on your hands from infecting you.
Use Clean Water and Boil Drinking Water
Rainy seasons often lead to water contamination. Drinking purified or boiled water minimises the risk of waterborne viral infections.
Eat Home-Cooked, Nutritious Food
Avoid street food as outdoor food is more susceptible to contamination during rain. A balanced diet strengthens the immune system, thereby, making it more resilient against infections.
Coughs and Sneezes
Use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth and nose and this can help prevent the spread of droplets. Proper respiratory hygiene minimises the spread of airborne viruses.
Get Vaccinated
Stay up to date with vaccines like the flu shot which can provide immunity against certain seasonal viruses. Vaccination is a powerful tool as it can reduce the severity and spread of viral diseases.
Wear a Mask
Masks reduce your exposure to airborne viruses in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.
Keep Your Surroundings Clean
Stagnant water can lead to mosquito breeding which spreads diseases like dengue. Regularly clean and disinfect living areas and use mosquito repellents to reduce risks.
