Winters are normally a very challenging time for children as they are more exposed to getting infections as well as having cough and cold due to changes in weather conditions. Living in Delhi makes this even more challenging because not only do you tend to get more infections in winter but exposure to pollution makes it worse for children to stay healthy. We got in touch with Dr Raghuram Mallaiah, Senior Director, Neonatology, Fortis La Femme, Greater Kailash, New Delhi who shares how to protect your kids from common illnesses during winters.
Health Challenges in Winters for Kids:
According to Dr Raghuram, children are particularly vulnerable to viral infections during the winter months due to changes in temperature and humidity. “In addition to the viral infections that are prevalent during this season, living in areas like Delhi presents additional risks, especially due to the pollution,” he said. “NCR pollution is a major contributor to the frequency of doctor visits during winter, as it not only causes respiratory issues like coughs and colds but also lowers immunity, making children more prone to infections,” he further said.
How To Protect Your Child From Falling Sick In Winter?
1. Proper Vaccination:The best way to keep your child safe from common winter illnesses is through timely vaccinations. Dr Raghuram shares that vaccines are essential for boosting your child's immunity. “The flu vaccine is particularly crucial before the winter months begin. It’s an annual vaccine that should be given every year,” he said. While the flu shot doesn’t protect against all viral infections, it significantly reduces the risk of serious illnesses such as influenza and swine flu, both of which are common during the colder months.
2. Protect Your Child Against Pollution:
Exposure to pollution can impact a child's health, particularly in cities with high levels of air pollution like Delhi. Dr Raghuram recommends simple lifestyle changes to protect children from harmful pollutants. “It’s important to avoid sending children outdoors during high pollution, particularly in the early mornings or late evenings when pollution levels tend to peak,” he advised. Limiting outdoor activities during these hours can help reduce the negative impact of pollution on your child’s health.
3. Lifestyle Changes to Boost Immunity:
In addition to vaccination, Dr Raghuram recommends making a few lifestyle changes to enhance a child’s immunity during the winter months. One of the most important steps is ensuring that children eat a healthy, balanced diet. “Fruits and vegetables are key sources of vitamins and antioxidants, which play a significant role in boosting immunity. Protein-rich foods and staying well-hydrated with plenty of water are also vital,” he said.
Parents should also focus on reducing their children’s consumption of junk food, as it can negatively affect their immune system. Rather than relying on vitamin supplements, children should get their essential vitamins—such as vitamin C and B complex—from natural food sources.
Another major factor in improving a child’s immunity is physical activity. “Children today often lead sedentary lives, spending hours in front of screens. Encouraging physical activity, even if it’s just dancing or playing a sport, can significantly improve blood circulation and overall health,” Dr Raghuram added.
4. Hygiene and Proper Dressing:
Maintaining good hygiene is another crucial aspect of preventing infections. Dr Raghuram suggests regular hand washing and sterilizing, especially before meals and after being outdoors. Ensuring that children bathe regularly and maintain personal cleanliness helps reduce the chances of bacterial and viral infections.
When it comes to dressing, many parents tend to over-clothe their children in an attempt to keep them warm, but this can be worse for kids. “It’s important not to over-bundle your child. Dress them in appropriate layers, just as you would for yourself,” he said. Overheating can be just as harmful as being underdressed.
5. Seeking Medical Advice:
Dr Raghuram shares consulting with a healthcare professional if a child develops symptoms such as fever, cough, or cold. “Self-medicating with antibiotics is never a good idea. Always seek medical advice from a doctor at the earliest signs of illness,” he said. Early intervention can help prevent the condition from worsening and speed up recovery.
