There have been reports of rising levels of lead found in turmeric sold in Asia, including India. Doctors warned that lead exposure through contaminated turmeric can impair kids’ cognitive functions and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke in adults.
A study published in the journal Science of The Total Environment found that turmeric sold in India’s Patna; Pakistan’s Karachi and Peshawar; and Nepal had lead levels in turmeric exceeding 1,000 micrograms/gram. This is about 200 times more than the limit set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) which is 10 micrograms/gram.
Speaking to IANS, Dr Mahesh Gupta, Senior Consultant - Medical Gastroenterology, Dharamshila Narayana Hospital, said, “Turmeric, widely recognised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, is often consumed in significant quantities, making lead contamination especially dangerous. Lead exposure through contaminated turmeric can cause gastrointestinal toxicity, manifesting as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and constipation.”
He added, “This study serves as a reminder to approach traditional remedies with caution, as overdose or consumption of contaminated turmeric could worsen health rather than improve it.”
The study showed that the most likely source of lead in turmeric samples was lead chromate. Polished roots and loose powder were the only forms of turmeric with lead levels above 1,000 micrograms/gram.
Lead buildup can impact an individual’s health immensely, especially children. It can also cause lead poisoning which happens when there is a build-up of lead in the body. This usually occurs over several months or years. Even small amounts of lead can lead to serious health issues.
Mayo Clinic says that children younger than 6 years are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. At very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal. “There is treatment for lead poisoning, but taking some simple precautions can help protect you and your family from lead exposure before harm is done.”

Complications of lead poisoning

Lead poisoning can cause severe health complications, especially in children and pregnant women.
In children, it can cause developmental delays, learning difficulties, irritability, weight loss and hearing problems. Chronic exposure to lead can also lead to severe health issues such as reduced IQ, attention deficit disorders, and behavioural problems.
In adults, lead poisoning can cause hypertension, joint and muscle pain, memory or concentration problems and headaches.
In severe cases, it can result in abdominal pain, mood disorders and reduced sperm count or abnormal sperm in men. Pregnant women exposed to lead risk miscarriage, premature birth and developmental issues in their unborn children. Long-term exposure can also lead to kidney damage and impaired neurological function.
