The festival of lights is here! While Diwali is a time of celebration, it can also unfortunately trigger eye problems due to the increased air pollution caused by the bursting of crackers. Delhi is already covered under a layer of smog that has caused a rise in respiratory issues across the state. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has ordered the implementation of stage two of the anti-pollution plan GRAP to curb further spread. Air pollution not only causes respiratory problems but can also trigger eye problems including allergies, and irritation as crackers contain toxic chemicals like barium and dioxins that may cause damage to your eyes.
Delhi air contains pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and heavy metals can cause a range of issues like irritation, redness, burning, watering and even blurred vision in worst-case scenarios. In rare cases, air pollution also increases the possibility of developing ocular surface disease, a serious eye condition that can even result in blindness.
Despite these risks, it is possible to have a happy and safe Diwali, if you can keep a few things in mind while engaging in celebrations. Dr Supriya Sriganesh, Phaco and Refractive Surgeon, Executive Director, Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bengaluru shares tips that will help you protect your eyes from potential air-borne irritants that can cloud your vision:
1. Maintain A Safe Distance While Bursting Crackers
If you choose to burst firecrackers during Diwali, make sure you go about it as responsibly as you can. Maintain a distance of at least five meters while watching and an arm's length while lighting crackers. “Avoid holding the cracker in your hand as much as possible, as it increases the risk of fumes entering your eyes and causing instant irritation and subsequent complications,” Dr Supriya shares.
2. Keep Your Hands Clean
Maintaining high levels of hand hygiene during Diwali celebrations is advised. The smoke generated from bursting crackers can enter your eyes, which in turn can increase the tendency to rub them vigorously. “If your hands are unclean, this can lead to irritants and allergens entering your eyes, making them red and itchy instantly. If not treated immediately, you can even get long-term eye issues as a result of this carelessness,” she said.
3. Use Eye Drops
If you are someone who is prone to eye allergies, then eye drops are your best friend during Diwali. Eye drops recommended by your doctor can lubricate your eyes and help maintain optimal levels of moisture. This can, in turn, help you avoid contracting dry eye syndrome, a condition where your eyes don't make enough tears to stay wet, or when your tears don't work correctly.
4. Drink Plenty Of Water
Staying hydrated is very important during Diwali festivities, as they can be physically taxing on every body part, including your eyes. Drinking an adequate amount of water is essential for maintaining the tear film in your eyes, leading to lesser chances of succumbing to eye fatigue. Eye fatigue, sometimes referred to as asthenopia or eye strain, is a condition that arises from overuse-related eye weariness.
5. Use An Air Purifier Indoors
Even if you are someone who prefers to celebrate a quiet Diwali indoors, you can still be exposed to harmful air fumes that penetrate walls and windows to enter your home. Air purifiers can enhance the quality of the air inside your home and protect you from harmful pollutants.
