World Spine Day 2024: 9 Tips That Can Help To Keep Your Spine Healthy
Tips That Can Help To Keep Your Spine Healthy
World Spine Day is observed globally on October 16 to raise awareness about the importance of spine health. The day also intends to inform people about the seriousness of spine health and why one should be careful about their spine. The day is celebrated by organising activities that are beneficial for the spine. World Spine Day was first observed for the first time in 2008.
World Federation of Chiropractic took the initiative to raise awareness about spinal health on an international scale. There has been a significant rise in the number of people suffering from back pain and spinal troubles. Therefore, it is extremely important that you take the necessary measures to keep your spine healthy.
Here, take a look at some of the tips that can help maintain your spine health.
Maintain Proper Posture
Good posture helps to keep the spine aligned, thereby, reducing strain on the muscles and ligaments. When you sit or stand with your back straight, it helps to prevent long-term issues like chronic pain or disc problems.
Exercise Regularly
Strengthening the core muscles helps to support the spine and helps maintain good posture. Regular physical activity such as walking, swimming or yoga helps to improve flexibility and reduces the risk of spine-related injuries.
Lift Properly
Use your legs and not your back when you’re lifting heavy objects. Bending at the knees and keeping the object close to your body can help prevent strain on the lower back and spine.
Stay Hydrated
The spinal discs depend on water to maintain flexibility and function as shock absorbers between vertebrae. When you stay hydrated, it helps to make sure that these discs remain healthy.
Sleep in a Healthy Position
Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees helps to maintain spine alignment. A good mattress that supports your spine’s natural curve is also important for spinal health.
Use Functional and Comfortable Furniture
You can invest in chairs and desks that help in proper spinal alignment, especially if you sit for long periods. An ergonomic setup reduces stress on your spine and helps prevent back pain.
Stretch Regularly
Stretching helps you maintain flexibility and mobility in the spine, thereby, reducing stiffness and preventing injuries. Regular stretching, especially, after long periods of sitting helps to keep the spine healthy.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Excess body weight puts additional pressure on the spine, especially on the lower back. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight helps to reduce strain on your spine and reduce the risk of spinal issues.
Quit Smoking
Smoking can reduce blood flow to the spine, thereby, weakening the vertebrae and discs over time. Quitting smoking can help to improve circulation and overall spinal health. This eventually helps to reduce the risk of degenerative spine conditions.
