A fitness YouTuber recently shot a nearly 50-hour fast food marathon - along with documenting various consequences of eating ultra-processed foods. Will Tennyson, a 30-year-old Canadian fitness and lifestyle social media influencer was shocked to know how these foods can alter not just your physical health, but mental well-being as well.
What did Tennyson eat?
Tennyson ate many types of fast foods and snacks, which included the ultra-processed ones loaded with colouring agents, artificial sweeteners and preservatives – pizzas, sugary cocktails, burgers breads, cereals and some yogurts.
After the end of day one, Tennyson, whose viral video accumulated over 5.3 million views, said he consumed at least 8,000 calories - more than triple his normal amount. He then reported negative effects on his overall energy levels and mental state.
Experts say ultra-processed foods make up most of the average diet across the world and cause serious health issues – coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, especially among youngsters.
Tennyson also said he got a video game console while eating snacks all day, however, he felt 'gross' in the end. According to experts, distracting yourself while playing on computer or mobile phones makes it easy to get distracted “and all of a sudden you [have eaten] 3,000 calories,” Tennyson said on his YouTube channel while filming.
What happened the next day?
Next day, Tennyson made a shocking admission: "Somehow I'm more malnourished than before despite like tripling my calories." The YouTuber added that he also had a breakout of spots on his face in just 24 hours. "I can practically make my own fries with the oil on my forehead," before revealing: "My muscles feel numb, and I feel kinda sad."
Tennyson also only recorded around 4,000 steps for the day, a lot less than normal, as health experts recommend people get at least 10,000 steps a day to improve their wellbeing.
Unmotivated and lethargic on the second day, he finished the 50-hour challenge by eating the rest of his pizza and having some sushi. On the morning of day three, he said, "Just got back from the gym and it was horrific. I was sweating more than ever I don't even know if it was sweat or if it was oil. The point was to show people that unhealthy habits don't just affect how you look, but they affect your overall well-being your mood, your happiness, your motivation, your drive," he said.
What are ultra-processed foods and how do they affect your health?
According to Harvard Health, some foods are highly processed or ultra-processed as they are packed with added ingredients like sugar, salt, fat, and artificial colors or preservatives. Ultra-processed foods are made mostly from substances extracted from foods - fats, starches, added sugars, and hydrogenated fats. They also contain additives like artificial colors and flavours or stabilizers.
Doctors say an ultra-processed diet leads to weight gain, apart from cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease.
